Testimonial from: Diane & David - March 2011We visited Sapa in March 2011 and were lucky to be put in contact with a young lady named Pet. This little dynamo gave us one of the best experiences of our whole 24 days in Vietnam. From the moment she met us at our hotel until our parting two days later we had a wonderful time. She spoke excellent English for starters which was an added bonus as we could actually ask questions and have our questions totally understood. Pet had incredible knowledge of Sapa, its culture and people. We could actually have a joke and she had such a good knowledge of English that she would "get" our humour and be able to have a laugh with us.
Day one Pet took us on a treck down the back track of Sapa through rice paddies, farms, past small dwellings and water mills. (not for anyone who isn't very sure on their feet) When we reached the bottom we had time at the beautiful falls and she helped us sample some of the local food which was cooked in front of us while we had a rest. She had our lunch packed in her back pack and when we were ready a lovely fresh bread roll was produced with freshly sliced tomato, cucumber and cheese then a piece of fresh fruit. It was just lovely, simple and prepared by Pet. The track we came down was a challenge and it extended us but it is a wonderful memory we will carry with us for a long time. Day 2 was a pea soup fog with light drizzle but Pet turned up at our hotel just as enthusiastic as the day before. She had organised to take us to the local villages where we did a gentle walk down a road and along the way we saw traditional people going about their daily lives, rice paddies, gardens, water buffalo etc. At lunch time we arrived at a home stay up on a hill and Pet cooked the most wonderful fresh Pho for us - it was delicious. The home stay had the cleanest rest rooms I have seen anywhere - here it was so primitive and we thought it would have very basic amenities but to our surprise here was this amazingly clean modern bathroom and even though the home stay had concrete floor it was spotless. All along the way Pet answered our many questions on local way of life etc. - I was amazed by her knowledge and enjoyed her warm personality and good sense of humour. At the end of Day 2 we were worried about our drive back down to the train due to the fog so Pet arranged for us to be driven in a safer mini bus with a good driver which we appreciated very much. She went out of her way to help us in any way possible and asked for nothing in return.
